Marvel Baker Hall

Completed in 1969, Marvel Baker Hall permitted total integration of the staff members
concerned with meat production and those specializing in dairy production. The facility has
research and teaching capabilities that enhance the effectiveness of the Animal Science
Department's public service. The academic community of animal agriculture centering in Marvel
Baker Hall stimulates self improvement and development of the scientist-teacher on the staff.
Nebraska's youth who study Animal Science profit through the excellence of the educational
opportunities available to them including work in the analytical laboratories, the meat laboratory,
and in the animal units as well as participating in extracurricular judging teams or other clubs.

Animal Sciences into the 21st Century

Life in Nebraska has always been closely tied to the land and its products. The animal resources of this state feed people throughout the world, and future findings in the animal industry can impact every person on earth. It is with this vision of service to the community, both local and global, that the University of Nebraska - Lincoln has provided a continually expanding Department of Animal Science. Educating young Nebraskans in all phases of the animal production cycle and researching ways to improve the animal industry have been a growing part of UNL's academic life for nearly 100 years. The latest development in that growth is the new Animal Sciences Building. Dedicating this complex recognizes the past and anticipates the future of the University's commitment to the animal sciences.Animal science programs at the University of Nebraska began with the establishment of the Department of Animal Husbandry by the Board of Regents in 1898. The first reference to experimental work with livestock was in 1891. The Animal Husbandry staff was housed in two rooms in the south wing of Agricultural Hall until moving into Animal Husbandry Hall in 1917. Animal Husbandry Hall, completed in 1908 and dedicated as Miller Hall in 1972, also housed agronomy and the Judging Pavillion.

R. B. Warren Arena Dedication

Richard "R.B." Warren was a member of the Animal Science
Department, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, from 1956 to
1990. A Kansas native, R.B. graduated with a B.S. degree in
Agriculture from Kansas State University and married
Doris Kite in 1948. He completed an M.S. degree in Animal
Breeding from Oklahoma State University in 1950 and
served on the Animal Science faculty at Michigan State
University for six years before coming to Nebraska. R.B.
Warren enthusiastically developed young leaders for the
animal industry
through
motivation,
quality learning,
skill development
and
personal mentoring.
His
legacy included
one of
the finest
youth horse
extension programs in the U.S. and development of the R.B.
Warren Scholarship, the Nebraska 4-H Horse Fund, and
other endowments to support horse programs, livestock
judging, and student scholarships. His leadership and dedication
are rightfully memorialized in naming the UNL Animal
Science arena the "R.B. Warren Arena."

University of Nebraska Animal Science Department Centennial Book of Memories

This year marks the 1O0-year anniversary of the Department of Animal Science at the
University of Nebraska. Our history is a rich one, with many achievements of our students, our
research programs, and our service and outreach to the animal industries of Nebraska, the nation,
and the world. With over three thousand alumni, we have an outstanding legacy in the
development of animal industry leaders.
On Saturday, October 10, we will celebrate these one hundred years of achievement with
several activities in Lincoln. Enclosed you will find descriptions of the program during the
middle of the day, held "at home" on campus in the Animal Science Building. In the evening,
we have a dinner at the Cornhusker Hotel in downtown Lincoln. After the dinner, we will hear
from Chuck Schroeder, commenting on our past and our challenges for the future.
The Faculty of Animal Science invites you to take part in our Centennial Celebration. A
registration form is enclosed, and we hope that you can be our guest for this celebration of our
collective past. Because you have made contributions to our history and are special to us, our
celebration event will be meaningful only if those like yourself can come and celebrate with us.
We are also compiling a book of commemorative letters, where you can share with others
what the Department of Animal Science has meant to you. Even if you can not be in Lincoln for
the events on October 10, we invite you to send a commemorative letter.
With expectations for a festive and meaningful Centennial Celebration, we look forward to
hosting you in Lincoln and continuing to have you as part of the role and mission of Animal
Science in Nebraska.

The Meat Laboratory was completed in 1953 and dedicated to the memory of Professor William J. Loeffel, longtime meat researcher and former department chairman of the Animal Science Department, University of Nebraska.
The Loeffel Meat Laboratory, a Federally Inspected facility, was designed for both undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and extension meat programs. Originally it was a three-story brick building in the northeast part of the Agricultural Campus. The building was L-shaped, 112 feet by 38 feet wide with a wing at the rear 60 feet long and 45 feet wide. It was designed as a low-maintenance building, meeting all modern sanitary requirements.
