Bureau and Los Angeles Office files contain no derogatory security-type information concerning Rock Hudson. Los Angeles has advised that it is general common knowledge in the motion picture industry that Rock Hudson is suspected of having homosexual tenancies.

In view that Rock Hudson has homosexual tendencies, interview will be conducted by two mature experienced Special Agents.

ACTION:

Attached, if you agree, is the letter authorizing Los Angeles Office to interviewRock Hudson as outlined above.

Rock Hudson has not been the subject of an FBI investigation. During 1965, however, a confidential information reported that several years ago while he was in New York he had an "affair" with movie star Rock Hudson. The informant stated from personal knowledge that he knew Rock Hudson was a homosexual. The belief was expressed that by "personal knowledge" the informant meant he had personally indulged in homosexual acts with Rock Hudson or had witnessed or received the information from individuals who had done so.

On another occasion, information was received by the Los Angeles Office of the FBI that it was common knowledge in the motion picture industry that Rock Hudson was suspected of having homosexual tendencies.

Crime Against People with
Disabilities, 2007

Persons age 12 or older with disabilities experienced approximately 716,000 nonfatal violent crimes and 2.3 million property crimes in 2007 as measured by the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). Nonfatal violent crimes include rape, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault. Property crimes include household burglary, motor vehicle theft, and property theft.

About one third (34%) of the crimes against persons with or without a disability in 2007 were serious violent crimes (rape/sexual assault, robbery, or aggravated assault). Persons with disabilities were victims of about 47,000 rapes, 79,000 robberies, 114,000 aggravated assaults, and 476,000 simple assaults.

Findings in this report are the first estimates of crime against people with disabilities measured by the NCVS, administered by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). The NCVS adopted questions from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS) to identify respondents who had a disability. Disability is defined as a long-lasting (six months or more) sensory, physical, mental, or emotional condition that makes it difficult for a person to perform daily living activities. The NCVS questions identified six types of disabilities: sensory, physical, cognitive functioning, self-care, go-outside-the-home, and employment (see box, page 3).

This report focuses on the victimization experiences of persons with disabilities, including comparisons to persons without disabilities, disability types, victim characteristics, and crime characteristics, such as reporting crime to the police and the presence of weapons during the crime.

Findings from the NCVS include—

• Age-adjusted rate of nonfatal violent crime against persons with disabilities was 1.5 times higher than the rate for persons without disabilities.
• Persons with a disability had an age-adjusted rate of rape or sexual assault that was more than twice the rate for persons without a disability.
• Females with a disability had a higher victimization rate than males with a disability; males had a higher rate than females among those without a disability.
• Persons with a cognitive functioning disability had a higher risk of violent victimization than persons with any other type of disability.
• Persons with more than one type of disability accounted for about 56% of all violent crime victimizations against those with any disability.
• Nearly 1 in 5 violent crime victims with a disability believed that they became a victim because of their disability.
• Victims with a disability perceived offenders to be under the influence of either alcohol or drugs in about a third of all violent crimes against them.
• Violent crime victims with or without a disability were equally as likely to face an armed offender, report the crime to the police, or suffer an injury.

From: L.B. Nichols

Subject: Lucille Ball

X called to inquire if we could give him any guidance on Lucille Ball, the television actress. I asked him what his angle was. He then stated X had a notation earlier this week about a prominent television actress being turned up as a Communist; that their Los Angeles managed had checked the registration records (I assume voting registration records) and found Lucille Ball was listed as a Communist in 1936 and 1938. The handwriting was identical and they have checked the address back to the address of the Lucille Ball who is the actress.

I told X that I had heard a rumble; that the House Committee was holding some hearing and that he might want to check with them as they may have turned up something like this. He stated that this probably was the explanation; they would check further.

In 1963, a rock group named the Kingsmen recorded the song “Louie, Louie.” The popularity of the song and difficulty in discerning the lyrics led some people to suspect the song was obscene. The FBI was asked to investigate whether or not those involved with the song violated laws against the interstate transportation of obscene material. The limited investigation lasted from February to May 1964 and discovered no evidence of obscenity.

Federal Bureau of Investigation December 11, 1935

Dear sir,

Reference is made to letter to the Bureau from the New York Office dated December 9, 1935, copy of which was furnished to the Jacksonville office, and to which was attached photostatic copies of two letters and envelopes, the originals of which accompanied letters to the New York Office dated December 5, 1935.

Relative to this matter I desire to advise the Bureau and the New York Office as follows:

Sunday, December, 8, 1935, about 1:00 p.m. I received a telephone call at the Jacksonville Office from a person who refused to give his name or address. He stated that he wished to confer with the writer concerning a matter that might possibly be of interest to the Government. He was advised that the writer would be in his office during the entire day of Sunday and would be glad to confer with him. He replied, stating that it would be impossible for him to call at the Jacksonville Office on Sunday, but that he would call some day during the week.

About thirty minutes prior to the receipt of the copy of the New York Bureau Office letter to the Bureau a boy about 15 years of age, entered our office and was approached by the Chief Clerk. He stated that he has previously telephones for an appointment and that he wanted to confer with the man in charge of the office, concerning information that he had that might be of interest to the government.

Memorandum for Mr. Tolson

Hon. J. Edgar Hoover, FBI

Dear Sir,

Is the old time Jessie James still alive? This week there was here in this place a man who claimed to be the original Jessie James. He exhibited himself at a picture show here.

I talked with him at a hotel here for over an hour, and he talked very convincingly that he was the original Jessie James of outlaw fame. He is an old man of 90 years old, and he talked like he was telling honest facts within his experience.

I never did dream that I would ever see Jessie James.

I know that you are in touch with all such, and I would be glad to hear from you about this, and thanking you.

Dear X,

Your letter of March 10, 1949 has been received. In response to your inquiry, the Encyclopedia Britannica indicates that Jesse James, the notorious outlaw, was born on September 5, 1847 in Clay County, Missouri. He became the leader of the "James Band" of bank and train robbers in 1967 and as a result of a $10,000 reward offered by Governor Crittenden of Missouri for his capture dead or alive, two members of his own band turned traitors and shot and instantly killed him in his home at St. Joseph, Missouri, April 3, 1882.

Sincerely yours,

John Edgar Hoover, Director

Letters to J. Edgar Hoover about the identification of Jesse James

Please refer to the letter I have prepared addressed to X concerning the claims of an individual now residing in that city, to the effect that he is the original JESSE JAMES.

Of course, Jesse James fingerprints never were taken. It follows that any identification would have to be made upon the basis of physical characteristics and photographs. The photograph of the younger person transmitted by X no doubt is a wood cut of the original Jesse James. After examining this photo, or cut, it is the opinion of X, who has specialized somewhat in Portrait Parle, and the undersigned, that the person now claiming to be Jesse James is an imposter. It is realized, of course, that the wood cut may not have been a perfect likeness. It is realized further that the facial appearance of any individual changes with age, but we base our conclusion upon the following:

There is a marked dissimilarity in the appearance of the ears, particularly in the outer depression. In the case of the original Jesse James, this is very wide at the top, with the result that the inner depression is narrow. In the case of the person claiming to be James, both depressions are elongated. Other dis-similarities are that the original Jesse James seems to have an elevation over the eyes not noticeable in the photographs of the later James; that the nose of the individual claiming to be James is elongated and inclined to be humped, whereas the nose of the original James seems to be somewhat short and uplifted on the end giving a retrousse aspect; that the jaw of the original James is much squarer than that of the present claimant and that the bald spot on the head of the original Jesse James recedes to a point now covered by the hair of the present claimant. It is noticed also, that the claimants eyes are crossed.

On 1/23/89, complainant telephoned Assistant Section Cheif FBIHQ, alleging violation of rights of JAMES BROWN by UNSUBS, Officers of Richmond Country Police Department, Augusta, Georgia, and by his attorney, all growing out of a confrontation which began in Augusta, and ended with BROWN'S tires being shot out in South Carolina. On 2/9/89, complainant advised she had no first-hand knowledge of the situation, but he patched her husband through from prison in Columbia, South Carolina, where he is serving his sentence. JAMES BROWN alleges violations were made by South Carolina police, rather than by Georgia. Complainant to be interviewed 2/10/89. Victim requests to be interviewed at Columbia.

MRS. BROWN states that she is the wife of entertainer JAMES BROWN and wished to furnish information concerning what she believes is a pattern of harassment on the part of law enforcement officers against her husband which has been going on for about one and one half years.

MRS. BROWN recalled that the first incident which led her to believe her husband was being harassed took place about 9:30 p.m. one night when she and JAMES BROWN were driving toward their home in Beech Island, South Carolina. They were passing through Richmond County on their way home when they bumped into the rear bumper of a car which had stopped in the roadway. The bumper of the other car was bent in a minor way, and the BROWN's van stalled. Other people at the scene helped JAMES BROWN get the car started by "jump starting" the engine. As the BROWN's drove off, they heard someone yell, "That's James Brown." The car which they had bumped began to follow them and a police officer pulled the van over after they entered South Carolina. when JAMES BROWN asked what he had done to be pulled over, the officer ordered him out of his car in a very unpleasant manner. The officer then threw JAMES BROWN against the car and ordered him to spread his legs.

Copyright Infringement Case

On November 2, 1936 Mr. Russell Graham Attorney at Law, contacted the Los Angeles division of the Bureau and alleged that on September 1, 1936, Groucho and Chico Marx, radio and motion picture entertainers, presented a radio sketch on the Reynolds broadcast at the Hollywood Music Box Theater. The sketch was substantially the same as the radio serial comedy called, "The Hollywood Adventures of Mr. Dibble," on April 10, 1934.

My Graham said that the Marx brothers presented the sketch that had been written and copyrighted by Garrett Graham, with the knowledge that it was copyrighted material; that they gained this knowledge through negotiations held between the Marx Brothers and the Graham Brothers, Garrett and Carrell, for the use of the copyrighted sketch is a pending deal with prospective sponsors of a radio serial.

A report dated August 17, 1953 was received on August 20, 1953 from Confidential Informant of known reliability. Reports state that Groucho Marx contributes heavily to the Communist Party. Informant said not to get impatient as the CP in Orange County is not well organized now. He said the CP was going to reorganize in Orange County in the near future. At that time every member will be evaluated and individual jobs will be reassigned.

Subject is radio and TV comedian currently starring in TV show "You Bet Your Life" sponsored by Desoto-Plymouth Dealers over NBC. Informant recently remarked to confidential informant that GRAUCHO MARX contributes heavily to CP; however, original source gave no basis for this allegation. Los Angeles informants familiar with CP activity in Hollywood motion picture and radio industry throughout 1940's state Marx was never affiliated with CP and never a contributor so far as informants are aware. In 1934, The Daily Worker quoted Marx as saying "The battle of the Communists for the lives of theses bots is one that will be taught in Soviet America as the most inspiring and courageous battle every fought." Subject reported to be affiliated or otherwise interested in varying degrees of Communist front or influenced organizations, including League of American Writers, American Council of Soviet Friendship, Hollywood Democratic Committee, Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee, and others. Marx was indicted and convicted for violation of Copyright law in 1937.

Mr. Ernest Hemingway, well-known American writer, recently has been acting as personal informant of Ambassador Spruille Braden in Havana, Cuba.

Hemingway, it will be recalled, engaged actively on the side of the Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War, and it is reported that he is very well acquainted with a large number of Spanish refugees in Cuba and elsewhere. Hemingway, it will be recalled, joined in attacking the Bureau early in 1940, at the time of the "general smear campaign" following the arrests of certain individuals in Detroit charged with violation of Federal statutes in connection with their participation in the Spanish Civil War activities. It will be recalled that Hemingway signed a declaration, along with a number of other individuals, severely criticizing the Bureau in connection with the Detroit arrests. Hemingway has been accused of being of Communist sympathy, although we are advised that he has denied and does vigorously dent any Communist affiliation or sympathy. Hemingway is reported to be personally friendly with Ambassador Braden, and he is reported to enjoy the Ambassador's friendly terms with United States Consul Kennett Potter, presently stationed in Cuba, and with Mr. Robert P. Joyce, Second Secretary of the American Embassy in Havana.
