Abstract

Abstract in English:

A man like Vicente Blasco Ibáñez , temperamentally rebellious, always holding a clear and definite position against the traditional monarchy, could not aspire to applause from all the Spanish people. In the political realm as well as in the realm of literary criticism, he had strong enemies that he faced with bravery and pride. The work of a writer with his temperament has a very direct relationship with his life and his surroundings.

In this work we are most interested in distinguishing the figure of the writer through his novels and Valencian stories. We propose performing an analysis of the mixture of styles and inspirational motives through this first phase of his literary works. It is also imperative to do a cursory study of his personality, a description of the Valencian region, and the customs that form the temperament of the man from this region in order to arrive at definite conclusions.

We will study, then, Blasco Ibáñez, the novelist. That is to say, we will search for the features of his personality, the aspects that led him to write his novels in a rapid manner, well-intentioned and picturesque, with a spectrum of styles that makes him appear in our eyes as a narrator of linguistic ups and downs, who doesn’t obey even his own restless temperament and his tough “valencianismo.”

Chapters include: The Man, The Medium, Cuentos Valencianos [Valencian Stories], La Condenada y Otros Cuentos [The Condemned Woman and Other Stories], Arroz y Tartana, Flor de Mayo [Mayflower], La Barraca [The Cabin], Entre Naranjos, Sonnica la Cortesana [Sonnica], Caña y Barro [Reeds and Mud].
