Abstract

Continuing professional development (CPD) is a significant element in the most occupations today, library and information professionals are no exception. They need to be state-of-the-art to deliver services for library users effectively and efficiently by acquiring contemporary knowledge that required a new set of skills. This study describes the needs and current status of CPD for university librarians in Sri Lanka. The study adopted the survey method and a questionnaire was used as the data collection tool. The study outlines current practices and future needs of CPD programs for the Sri Lankan university libraries. The results have significance for the planning of CPD programs in university libraries in Sri Lanka. Based on the findings and the conclusion some recommendations were made at the end of the study.
