Abstract

The application of Information and Communications Technology (ICTs) in education has revolutionized teaching and learning. This study sought to determine the influence of ICT in terms of students’ attitude towards ICT use and the extent of using ICT facilities on students’ academic performance in mathematics. Specifically, the study focused on the students’ attitude towards ICT use, the extent to which ICT facilities was used, challenges encountered in the course of using it, the significant effect of ICT on student academic performance in mathematics and significant difference on academic performance based on gender.

The study was non-experimental, it adopted survey research type. The stratified sampling method was used to select the population. Two instruments were used to collect data for the study, these are questionnaire and mathematics achievement test were used to gather information from 120 SS2 students, randomly selected from the selected secondary schools in Efon-Alaaye local government area of Ekiti state.

Five research questions were answered in the study and the data analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools at 0.05 level of significance.

Result indicated that majority of the students showed a positive attitude toward ICT use by believing that information from ICT is better than using textbooks or any printed material, ICT improves their learning ability in subjects like mathematics, ICT makes studying mathematics more interesting, ICT gives them the opportunity to interact and with other students in foreign countries as well enables them to assess current learning materials in mathematics. Laptops, internet and projectors to a very large extent, are the most frequently used ICT facilities by students for learning in less than 2hours daily. Power requirement and expensiveness of ICT facilities, insufficient allotted time for ICT usage in classroom, computer illiteracy among most teachers and bad internet network among others are the major constraints militating against effective ICT use in learning. The study also showed that the use of ICT has a significant effect on students’ academic performance (t=-1.368, Df=58,P<0.05) and on the other hand gender difference has no significant effect on students’ academic performance (t= -1.030,Df=118,P>0.05).

The study recommended that government’s presence should be felt in schools by providing ICT facilities and organizing ICT training for teachers to give them a right attitude to ICT usage with a view to improve Nigeria educational system to be able compete with other developed countries of the world.

In conclusion, the students’ attitude towards the use of ICT enabled them to maximize the use of ICT facilities irrespective of the challenges encountered, resulting in improved academic performance. Irrespective of gender, ICT usage has significant effect on students’ academic performance
