Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate digital competence and self-efficacy in academic libraries in South-West region of Nigeria using the framework of Big Data adoption.

Design/methodology/approach: An open-ended follow-up survey (google form), utilising a qualitative methodology, was distributed among system librarians in six academic libraries in South-West Nigeria.

Findings: The present volume of literature has led to a variety of opinions from the perspective of librarians about what constitutes an appropriate definition of Big Data adoption. Academic libraries and system librarians have not provided much thought to the idea of Big Data adoption services in libraries. Furthermore, the results of the research suggest that academic libraries located in South-West Nigeria are actively utilizing Big Data adoption. The results of the poll highlight the need for academic librarians to have even more training in Big Data and its possible uses. Thus, the goal of this study is to determine whether digital self-efficacy and digital competence may help enhance the application of Big Data adoption in academic libraries in context.

Research limitations/implications: This study disregards the perspectives of other African nations by focusing only on the Nigerian issue. Extrapolating the study's findings to the greater African library community may not be possible, for this reason.

Practical implications: This study reveals that, despite encountering certain obstacles, digital self-efficacy and digital competencies have a significant impact on the adoption of Big Data adoption in academic libraries located in South-West region, Nigeria.

Social implications: It is common knowledge that Big Data technology has the capacity to advance scholarly research, maximize resource management, and enhance user experiences. Consequently, it's critical to approach its implementation with a sense of social responsibility and pay close attention to concerns of equity and ethics.

Originality/value: In addition to highlighting the dearth of research on digital self-efficacy and digital competences, this study also reveals the consensus among system librarians regarding the relevance of Big Data adoption in academic libraries in context
