Abstract

The first Great Plains Sculpture exhibition held during the summer of 1975 was an event created entirely out of good will. The exhibitors and the sponsors, the University's Department of Art and the Sheldon Gallery, put it together with a minimum of planning and no budget. It was motivated by two factors, one to provide an opportunity for the sculptors of the region to show their work out of doors, and two, an opportunity to make appropriate use of the Sheldon Sculpture Garden.

In the 1976 exhibition we have moved off ground-zero with the publication of this catalog and it is our plan that the exhibition will continue to grow in scope and quality to become a considerable factor in the sculptural activity of the Great Plains Region. The additional opportunity to show the exhibition to the 40th Annual Meetting of the Mid-America College Art Association is also of importance. As plans for 1977 are developed we hope to be able to offer not only an exhibition in the context of the Sheldon Gallery's permanent collection and and an illustrated catalog but the possibility of awards, purchases and professional workshops and seminars.

We would like to express our appreciation to the sponsors who have contributed to the present catalog and, most of all, the the artists who have contributed, not only their work, but time and effort as well.
