Abstract

The Power Plant at the city campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln discharges its wastewater to the municipal storm sewer system. Since December of 1974, it has been issued a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit by the State Department of Environmental Control. The permit requires the Power Plant to monitor the thermal and chemical characteristics of its wastewater. The purpose is to verify compliance with the current effluent limitations.

Under the NPDES program, it is the responsibility of the Power Plant to evaluate treatment facilities in order to comply with the 1983 Best Available Technology (BAT) effluent standards. The objective of this thesis is to make a comprehensive water and wastewater study of the Power Plant and consider additional treatment methods required to comply with stipulated effluent limits.
