Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate both the prose and the poetry of Alice Meynell.More particularly, it shall try to show something of the origin and character of her writings, giving considerable attention to the environment which inspired and shaped to some extent the literary output of this modest genius.

The plan in this study is to consider, first, the factors of heredity and environment which produced and played upon the sensitive poetic mind of Mrs. Maynell; next, the products in verse and prose of this mind; and, finally, the themes, forms, and literary excellencies or shortcomings of her writings. As far as it can be done, this study also shall evaluate Mrs. Meynell’s poetry in terms of the enjoyment which it holds for present-day readers.
