COMPARATIVE PHYSIOLOGY OF ACTINOMYCES IN RELATION TO POTATO SCAB
Abstract
Practically every type of soil contains a large number of different Actinomyces, the majority of which are saprophytic, whilsothers are parasitic on different crop planta such as potatoss, bests, radishes, etc. One of the most important of these diseases is potato seab, caused by Actinomyces scabies (Thaxter) Gussow. However, Millard and Burr (23) indicated that there are a number of species of Actinomycas which are able to cause different types of potato scab. Lutman et al (21) believed that pathogenicity is lost in the absence of the host and that in regaining its pathogenic habits it produces a milder form of seab, russeting. At the present time it is impossible to differentiate parasitic and saprophytic actinomyces in any other way than by inoculation tests.
