SOME PROPERTIES OF BASIC ORDER RELATIONS IN THE ARITHMETIC OF RELATION ALGEBRAS

M. L KEEDY, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The theory of relations has been investigated by Peirce and Schröder, the works of the latter being extensive, albeit tedious to read. In 1941 Tarski gested that continued study of the theory of relations would be productive, that certain of the more important properties in that theory of relations could be used to define an abstract system, and that most of the results of Schröder could be proved easily using such a set of axioms. Tarski and McKinsey, acting at Tarski's suggestion, proposed a set of axioms which characterized abstractly the ordinary system considered in the study of binary relations, namely a set of binary relations, together with the operations of intersection, union, com- plementation, relative multiplication, and conversion.
