Threaded rod continuity system for precast prestressed girder bridges

Ning Wang, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

This dissertation recalls the earlier research on Precast Prestressed Girders Continuity System done at the University of Nebraska and introduces a new design detail by placing Threaded Rod (TR) above the girder top flange. The new TR continuity system has all the advantages of post-tensioning continuity system with lower cost and simpler construction. The dissertation presents current continuity methods and describes the construction procedures, the design criteria and analysis method of the proposed continuity system. The testing procedure of three full-scale specimens is described. Research and testing on threaded rod fatigue limit completed by the author are also described. A preliminary design chart aid is included for designers to use. Finally, Strength Design at Release Method is proposed for bridge design.
