From concept to completion a strategic analysis: Concerto for trombone and orchestra

Daniel Baldwin, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

In November of 2012, my dad passed away and left a huge hole in my heart. After several years of reflection and grief, I made the decision to dedicate my dissertation project to his memory. It was his advice that led me to pursue this degree program and he was a devout supporter of my desire to become a composer. This dissertation analysis will inform the reader of the inspiration behind the writing of each movement, which deal with the various stages of grief I experienced, offer a formal analysis, and explore strategic thematic and harmonic elements important to the work. Lastly, this study will argue the effectiveness of the work as global statement as it pertains to the story conveyed.
