THE CHRISTIANIZATION AND COLONIZATION OF THE LANDS EAST OF THE ELBE.
Abstract
Eastern Germany, that part of the Reich lying east of the Elbe river, and hence sometimes referred to as East Elbia, embraced the Prussian provinces of Brandenburg, Pomerania, Silesia, East Prussia, and the state of Mecklenburg. The land forms part of the great lowland plain of Europe that subdivides eastern Germany into more or less distinct zones. In the north the coastal provinces of East Prussia, Pomerania, and the state of Mecklenburg constitute the Baltic zone, which divides into five areas: the Mecklenburg lake plateau, the lower Oder valley, the Pomeranian lake plateau, the Vistula valley, and the East Prussian lake plateau.
