AN INVERTED FACTOR ANALYSIS OF PERSONALITY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CAREER-ORIENTED AND HOMEMAKING-ORIENTED WOMEN

DONALD LEE AVILA, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Smuts (1959) has said, "a major revolution has occurred in the United States in the position of women in the world of work," and the studies conducted by the National Manpower Council (1957, 1958) strongly confirm this statement. However, the Council also revealed that there is a considerable lack of reliable knowledge regarding this increasingly large portion of our working force (National Manpower Council, 1958). Particularly lacking was research regarding the motivation of women for work or homemaking, answers as to why one woman will choose to remain in the home while another will partially or totally reject homemaking activities in favor of outside employment. The Council (1958) dealt with this problem of differential motivation, and their discussions centered around such causal factors as economic need, boredom, personality differences, independence, family problems and patriotism. However, because of the paucity of reliable data in this area, "The conferees readily admitted that much remained to be learned and understood about the tendency of women to leave the home for employment," and that the underlying motivation of women to remain in the home or enter employment "is still a matter of speculation."
