A STUDY OF THE THERMOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF RED AND YELLOW MERCURY(II) OXIDE

MARGARET LOUISE NIELSEN RODENBURG, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The nature of the differences between red and yellow mercury (II) oxide has been investigated by numerous people from many different approaches for the last eighty years. Early work indicates that both forms are ortho- rhombic with particle size being the difference. In 1958, Aurivillius reported work in which a second crystal structure, the hexagonal form is unquestionably identified. In spite of this, the majority of articles published since still do not specify which crystal structure was used or in some cases not even the source of the sample. For this reason it is difficult to interpret these results.
