ALTRUISM IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Abstract
One of the most significant events of the currert century has been the discovery of methods that make it possible to scientifically evaluate human personality. This is not to say that only in this century has there been an interest in human nature. As long as man has left records he has shown a curiosity about the mind. World literature is full of reference to the nature of the human being. We have then, as Allport (1960, p. 3) states, "... two principal approaches to the detailed study of human personality: literature and psychology." Allport goes on to make the point that neither literature nor psychology is "better" than the other because each has its distinctive merits. Too often, however, the advocates of one method are scornful of the efforts of the other.
