INDECENCIES IN DONNE'S LOVE POETRY AND RENAISSANCE MOCK-SERIOUS PERSPECTIVES

LARRY DEAN TJARKS, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Most Ovidian elements in Donne's Songs and Sonets and his Elegies need more detailed investigations than we presently have. Although Sir Herbert Grierson first discussed the com- mon tone of "witty depravity" in Donne and Ovid, he could not quite solve the recurring problem of Donne's indecency; for while Grierson distinguished the "heartless sensuality" of Ovid from the "gay wit" of Donne, he also said: "even those Elegies which seem to our taste most reprehensible are aerated by a wit which makes us almost forget their indecency. "1 That indecency which Grierson could almost forget has been very well remembered by many, if not most, subsequent critics.
