BEEKEEPING IN YUCATAN: A STUDY IN HISTORICAL-CULTURAL ZOOGEOGRAPHY.

CHARLES FRANKLIN CALKINS, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the processes and patterns related to the historical evolution of apiculture in the State of Yucatan, Mexico, with emphasis on beekeeping in the present cultural and physical landscapes of the area. Included in the general scope of the problem are a number of concomitant questions. Among the more important of these are:1. What has been and is the role of beekeeping in the culture complex of Yucatan?2. What has been and is the distributional pattern of beekeeping in the area, and how is this related to the elements of the cultural and physical environments?3. What changes have taken place in beekeeping and are there spatial expressions of these changes?4. Do the cultural backgrounds of beekeepers affect the process of beekeeping and, if so, are there observable manifestations of these effects?
