AN APPLICATION OF A RESPONSIVE EVALUATION APPROACH TO TWO PROGRAMS IN MEDICAL EDUCATION.
Abstract
In recent years educational institutions have faced increasing de- mands for accountability about the results and effectiveness of their programs (Baker, 1973; House, 1973b; McDonald, 1973; Stake, 1973e). This situation is true of education in general, but it is especially true in areas of medical education (Schulberg, 1969a). Knowledge about overall results of educational programs has been minimal, however, as pointed out by Wilford Aiken, "It is an amazing fact that our schools and colleges know little of the results of their work" (Miller, et al., 1968, p. 193). The question needs to be raised as to why the outcomes of education remain obscure and unevaluated. In discussing the problem in relation to medical education, Miller (1968) attributes the situation to a misconception about evaluation:
