A STUDY TO ASSESS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF CONCEPT AND CAREER GOALS IN EDUCATION OF FEMALE PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS

CHERYL KAY BAYLEY, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The major purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self concept and career goals with a group of prospective women teachers. The study also sought to determine whether significant differences existed between self concept and career expectations among the women subjects and whether significant differences existed between a group of prospective women and men teachers based on career goals in education and self concept. In addition the investigation sought to determine whether significant differences existed in self concept and career goals among prospective women teachers when categorized according to age, marital status, teaching level preparation, size of home community, and parents' education. The population included 189 student subjects at the University of Nebraska who were student teaching during the spring semester of the 1980-1981 academic year. There were 147 women and forty-two men in the population. Each student took the Tennessee Self Concept Scale and completed a questionnaire designed to gather information about the student's background, career goals and expectations. The statistical techniques applied to treat the data were Pearson's product-moment correlation and one-way analysis of variance. According to the findings of this study, the Pearson correlation coefficient revealed only a slight relationship between self concept and career goals in a group of prospective women teachers. In this same group, no significant differences existed based on self concepts and career expectations. In addition no significant differences existed between a group of prospective women and a group of men teachers based on career goals in education and self concept. Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that no significant differences were revealed in a group of prospective women teachers on self concept when grouped according to age, marital status, teaching level preparation, size of home community, and parents' education. It was also concluded that no significant differences were observed in a group of prospective women teachers on career goals when grouped according to age, marital status, teaching level preparation, size of home community, and parents' education.
