A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ATTITUDES TOWARD COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTION AND LEARNING STYLES OF NURSING STUDENTS

PATRICIA JEAN MORIN, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

This research investigated the interaction between individual differences in learning styles and the instructional environment using computer assisted instruction. The affective outcome measures were analyzed in respect to individual differences. In addition to learning styles, other individual differences consisted of: (a) preferred clinical practice area of nursing, (b) previous exposure to computers, (c) year in baccalaureate nursing program, and (d) year in college, (e) age of the nursing student, and (f) grade point average of the nursing student. Data collection for this study included the use of Kolb's Learning Style Inventory to determine the students' learning styles. A stratified sampling technique was used to place each student, according to the score received, into learning style type categories. Subjects who were randomly selected viewed a computer program for a minimum of 20 minutes and Kelly's Ajective Rating Scale obtained scores for five factors related to computer assisted instruction. Univariate analysis of variance was conducted on data relating to specific hypotheses in this study. In addition, many exploratory data analyses experiments were performed in the search for structure among and between the two dimensions of learning style and measurement of attitudes towards computer assisted instruction. The multivariate statistical procedures for Hotelling's T('2) and multivariate discriminant analysis were an integral part of the exploratory data analyses. Future research was also discussed.
