AN ANALYSIS OF BUSINESS TEACHER EDUCATION IN THE SIEC (ISBE) COUNTRIES: A STATUS STUDY (EUROPE, NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA)

Abstract

Purpose of the Study. The purpose of this study was to analyze the pre-service and in-service business teacher education programs in countries that were 1979-1980 members of the Societe Internationale pour 1'Enseignement Commercial (SIEC), also known as the International Society for Business Education (ISBE). Procedures. Selected literature was reviewed, and a pilot instrument was developed. A panel of six jury experts critiqued the instrument. The final instrument was sent to the 16 presidents of national SIEC chapters. Responses were received from Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, and the United States. No responses were received from Great Britain or Switzerland. Findings and Conclusions. The following selected findings and conclusions were based on data that concerned: (I) Pre-service (undergraduate business teacher education: (a) national, regional and other curricula designs existed among the SIEC countries; (b) business subjects, majors, licensing and degree requirements differed among countries; (c) Office Skills subjects were most commonly taught on the upper secondary school level or on the vocational/technical school level; (d) school-sponsored student organizations that promoted business or education existed in few SIEC countries; (e) occupational work experience was required in half the countries. (II) In-service (graduate) programs available to business teachers: (a) a variety of workshops existed among SIEC countries; (b) professional organizations existed in a majority of countries for business administration and secretarial science teachers, with more organizations reported for business administration teachers than for secretarial science teachers. (III) Trends expected during the next five years: (a) the supply of business teachers and demand for them will vary among SIEC countries; (b) half the national governments will maintain their present level of funding for business teacher education programs; (c) innovative programs will develop in fewer than half the SIEC countries.
