SEX-ROLE IDENTITY IN ATTITUDE TOWARD REMARRIAGE AND MATE SELECTION AMONG DIVORCED MEMBERS OF PARENTS WITHOUT PARTNERS

DIANE JUNE FOX, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

A sample of 62 male and 145 female divorced members of Parents Without Partners used the Bem Sex-Role Inventory to describe themselves and the ideal mate. Two hypotheses were supported for females but not for males: (a) divorced persons differ in their sex-role identity from the normative population; (b) the longer one is divorced, the more likely one will have a masculine sex-role identity. Unlike previous studies, all sex-role categories chose their sex-role counterpart as the ideal mate except masculine females who chose an androgynous ideal. Contrary to prediction, educational level and attitude toward remarriage were not significantly influenced by sex-role identity. Implications for adult education and recommendations for future research were given.
