AN ANALYSIS OF THE EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION, ENDORSEMENTS, AND ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LIBRARY-MEDIA PERSONNEL IN THE SCHOOLS OF NEBRASKA

EUNICE ELAINE PARRISH, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the educational preparation, endorsements, and roles and responsibilities of the people functioning in the positions of library-media personnel in the schools of Nebraska. The survey instrument was divided into two sections with the first being concerned with the demographic and program data of the respondents while the second dealt with the responsibilities of the library-media personnel. This instrument was sent to all library-media people listed in the Eighty-Fourth Nebraska Educational Directory, 1981-82. There was an 86.3 percent return (372 of 431 library-media people). Data obtained indicated a variety of titles were used but each included the word "library" or "media"; over half of the respondents served in more than one media center with one-third serving at both the elementary and secondary levels. Media centers frequently had one professional in charge and this person usually had more than one center for which to provide services. If there were more than two professionals, the print and non-print materials were divided. The ratio of professionals to students did not meet national standards in the majority of cases. Approximately 14 percent indicated no endorsement in library or media. Respondents did have longevity in their present positions. The library-media people in small schools did have additional extra-curricular activities and classroom assignments. Age and preparation seemed to be comparable; older respondents more frequently had a bachelor's degree and endorsements in the library science area. There was little difference in endorsement earned and title used. There was strong agreement on future use of computers for library services. Aides, both adults and students, were perceived to be important. One-third of the persons responding were over the age of 50 years. Many respondents indicated cut-backs in their staffs, both professional and non-professional. Since there was a large number of people working in more than one media center, the centers were frequently being manned by non-professionals for a large portion of the time.
