COMPARISON OF ANCILLARY SUPPORT SERVICES AND FAMILY SUPPORT SYSTEMS AND THE ACADEMIC PERSISTENCE OR NON-PERSISTENCE OF NON-TRADITIONAL AGED COLLEGE WOMEN
Abstract
The purpose of this study has been to examine the relationship that exists between ancillary support services and family support systems and persistence or non-persistence as they relate to non-traditional aged college women. The method used to assess the needed data for this ex post facto casual-comparative study was the survey questionnaire technique. The survey instrument was a branched questionnaire. There were two questionnaires developed, one completed by persisters and one completed by non-persisters. The four sections of the questionnaires were related to demographic variability, university service usage, and family support systems. The fifth section, filled out by non-persisters, related to reasons for non-persistence. A random sample of 326 non-traditional aged college women from the three participating schools returned the questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squares, and t-tests. The SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) was used for processing the collected data. There were six null hypotheses formulated. Of the responding 193 persisters and 133 non-persisters, the data indicated: there was a difference in the use of faculty advisers and the business office services at two schools; persisters saw their advisor more than did non-persisters; both groups had equally supportive families; women returning to school after three years were more likely to persist than those returning sooner. Very few differences were noted when the three schools were compared related to University support systems usage and family support systems. Financial problems were the major reason for this group of non-traditional age college women becoming non-persisters. Gaining employment and employment conflicts were the second and third most listed reasons for departure from schools. The comparison of these two groups revealed that there were very few differences noted between this group of persisters and non-persisters.
