A COMPARISON OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STUDENTS' DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS, THE ADMINISTRATION OF THEIR FINANCES AND THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE (FOREIGN STUDENTS, HIGHER EDUCATION, POLICY)
Abstract
Purpose of the Study. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects that the demographic differences and the structural management differences of the quantity and quality of financial resources to students from India, Iran, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela have on these students' grade point averages (GPA) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the 1979-83 school years. Procedure. Survey Research was selected, hence the researcher developed a financial administration questionnaire a sampled students responded to. Bar graphs were used to analyze the descriptive research objectives. A Two-Way Analysis of Variance was used to analyze the comparative and relationship research objectives. A Tukey Test, where necessary, was used to specify major causes of variances. Contingency tables were developed and a chi-square was used to test for significance among variables of these tables. The programs were taken from SPSS software and analysis done with the aid of a computer. Major Findings. (1) The most common, yet most unstable forms of financial resources to students were employment, family and personal funds. (2) University assistantship and home government funds were most stable and least available. (3) Students with stable funds were Indians and the Saudis, with annual expenditures of between $6,001 to $8,000. (4) Students with unstable funds were Nigerians and Iranians, with annual expenditure of between $8,001 to $10,000. (5) Nationality, level of study, marital status, age, family size and categories of financial resources each had statistically significant effect upon GPA. Major Implications. (1) A multi-billion dollar investment annually, yet international education is the least understood organization. (2) This organization shows significant wastes, uncertainties and ordeals. Major Recommendations. (1) Efforts to sponsor students abroad should involve local government districts with a central coordinating body in each country engaged in international education. (2) The University should base most of its aid to students on need. Other forms of aid should increase over employment. (3) Students should only be allowed to study abroad if sufficiently matured.
