COHESION IN THE WRITING OF TENTH-GRADERS

FRANKLIN EARL MAY, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

This research studied the cohesive devices used by tenth-graders. Student essays distinguished as low-score and high-score were compared to essay fragments from professional writing, according to cohesive devices and their frequencies of use. This study describes for each group the kinds and frequencies of use of cohesive devices. The study also describes the patterning of cohesive devices and their levels of modification within texts. The study shows that tenth-grade student writers have essentially mastered devices of cohesion in their writing and draws the appropriate implications for research and for teaching composition classes.
