A STUDY OF SELECTED EARLY-TYPE CONTACT AND SEMIDETACHED SYSTEMS

YAN-FENG LI, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Six early-type binary systems, LY Aur, IU Aur, V367Cyg, HR 4975, TX Cet, and RR TrA, were investigated with the Wilson and Devinney approach of light-curve analysis. LY Aur. The six bandpass OAO-2 observations of Heap, as well as the ground-based observations combined by Eaton, were used in the analysis. The system is found to be a regular Algol system with a mass ratio of 0.56. Absolute dimensions of the system have been calculated employing the photometric mass ratio. IU Aur. Photometric observations from 1964 to 1985 were collected and analyzed to study the cause for the increasing depth of minima with time. Both of the astrophysical and geometrical effects were discussed. IU Aur is found to be a regular Algol system with a mass ratio of about 0.68. V367 Cyg. Three groups of observations from 1957 to 1973 were analyzed separately. Three contact solutions were secured. Absolute dimensions of the system were calculated with the photometric mass ratio. It is suggested that V367 Cyg is at an evolved contact phase with active mass transfer and/or mass loss. HR 4975. The UBV observations by Waelkens and Bartholdi were analyzed. Three semidetached solutions for three values of mass ratio (q = 1.10, 1.37, and 1.75) were found. Masses and radii of the two components were estimated from the dynamical paralax and the separation of the visual double of the multiple system. TX Cet and RR TrA. The photoelectric observations of the two systems were re-analyzed. Both are found to be regular Algol systems. Masses and radii of components are estimated based on our solutions and the assumed masses of the primary components.
