AN ANALYSIS OF THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND THE EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION OF THE LIBRARY/MEDIA PERSONNEL IN THE SCHOOLS OF UTAH

DIANA TREMEWAN GRAFF, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The purpose to this study was to determine the roles and responsibilities of the library media personnel serving in the public schools of the State of Utah. A survey instrument was designed in four sections. The first section rank ordered the importance of twenty-five roles and responsibilities and also ascertained if these roles were being performed. The second section dealt with the demographics of the schools in which the respondents served. The third section assessed the educational preparation of the respondents and the fourth section asked open-ended question to determine inservice training needs and weaknesses of present educational programs. The instrument was sent to a random sample of the media specialists serving in the spring of 1984. There was a 49% return rate. Data obtained suggested that there was a difference between the roles and responsibilities performed by the two groups in this study: the media specialists and media aides. These differences occur in critical areas in the media program including budgeting, and serving on the curriculum committee. There was a difference between the extracurricular roles performed by media specialists and media aides as well as a difference in the number of years that members of these two groups had served. In the area of the new technology of computers and television, the media personnel were more likely to train teachers and students on the use of television rather than on the use of computers. Media centers most frequently had only one person serving in them and the media specialists were more often located in a secondary, urban school. There were differences in the types of extracurricular activities assigned to media specialists and media aides. The reported in-service needs and educational program weaknesses were similar for both groups and included additional computer preparation and additional instruction in the skills needed in administering the media center.
