STYLIZING, CULTURIZING, AND IMAGE-ACTION: THE DIALECTIC FORCES OF THE METAPHORIC EXPERIENCE
Abstract
Guided by the philosophical and critical tenets of the symbolic action and language-action perspectives, this dissertation explores the multidimensionality of the metaphoric experience. The study first conceptualizes metaphor as a process which gives form to human experience and action stylistically, culturally, and creatively, and then demonstrates the validity of such a conceptualization by revealing the way in which Ronald Reagan's images metaphorically create American grandeur out of American oppression. The study concludes by establishing experience, process, and dialectic action as the most insightful lines of metaphoric inquiry.
