An assessment of the effectiveness of an employee assistance program on absenteeism rates, turnover rates, and accident rates in a meat-packing facility in Central Nebraska

Kay Ann Hodge, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects an employee assistance program established in a meat-packing facility had on absenteeism, turnover, and on-the-job accident rates. The population for this study was comprised of 200 full-time employees of a meat-packing facility in Central Nebraska. Data on absenteeism, turnover, and accidents were gathered over a 30-month period prior to program implementation. These data were then compared with data gathered for 12 months after the program was implemented. The statistical analysis of the data was performed using a least-squares, linear-trend technique to determine the effect of the employee assistance program on absenteeism, turnover, and on-the-job accidents. An alpha level of.05 was selected to test the statistical significance. The null hypothesis and the results are shown below: (Ho$\sb1$) No statistically significant difference in absenteeism rates exists among employees who have access to an employee assistance program and employees who did not have access to an employee assistance program. (Ho$\sb2$) No statistically significant difference in rate of turnover exists among employees who have access to an employee assistance program and employees who did not have access to an employee assistance program. (Ho$\sb3$) No statistically significant difference in accident rates exists among employees who have access to an employee assistance program and employees who did not have access to an employee assistance program. The results of the statistical analysis indicated the following: Hypothesis (Ho$\sb1$) is accepted at the.05 alpha level. Hypothesis (Ho$\sb2$) is rejected at the.05 alpha level. Hypothesis (Ho$\sb3$) is rejected at the.05 alpha level. The results illustrated a statistically significant difference in turnover and accident rates after program implementation, and the statistical analysis indicated that the program appeared to be a significant factor in the change. However, no statistically significant change was shown in rates of absenteeism after program implementation.
