Semiotic aspects of the poetry of Gloria Fuertes and Angel Gonzalez. (Spanish text);

Peter E Browne, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The focus of our study is the poetry of two members of the Spanish Peninsular Generation of 1956-1971, Gloria Fuertes and Angel Gonzalez, as represented in their anthologies Obras incompletas and Poemas respectively. We adopt three main semiotic vantage points: (1) semantic transposition, involving a displacement of the signifier from its received position; (2) polyglossia, or the use of diverse linguistic systems and discursive strata; and (3) hypertextuality, or the creation of new textual realities on the basis of reaction to or evocation of previous texts. In our analysis of semantic transposition, we find that both poets make frequent use of chiasmus, the symmetrical cross over or inversion of units of meaning. This pattern invites a comparison with both the conceptismo techniques of Spanish Golden Age poetry and surrealist and psychoanalytic thought. We suggest that these currents have exerted varying degrees of influence over the poetry under consideration. Transposition also embraces metonymy, here understood as a projection from the poem's matrix or kernel meaning along chains of signifying units of various length. Such metonymic chains are particularly noteworthy in the poetry of Gloria Fuertes and are frequently employed in the communication of her gynesic content. Polyglossia implies the possibility of achieving novel juxtapositions and configurations and is employed by these poets at three different levels (1) that of national languages; (2) that of various linguistic registers within a single language, Castilian; (3) that of distinct discourses or cultural codes within the same. Hypertextuality may consist simply of the use of previous texts to enforce the meaning of a new one, but it frequently posits a breaking away from the former. It may also involve the bringing together of several textual evocations (hypotexts) in order to create novel combinations (pastiche), in which case we note a certain convergence with polyglossia.
