Receiving and finishing programs for calves

Abstract

Four receiving trials, four finishing trials, and one metabolism trial evaluated: (1) protein sources for calves, (2) energy source and escape protein (EP) for calves, and (3) digestibility of dry-rolled corn (DRC) and wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) in receiving diets. In receiving Trials 1 and 2, calves were fed DRC-alfalfa hay diets with urea (U), soybean meal (SBM), or feather meal (FTH). Performance and health were not affected (P $>$.15) by protein source. In finishing Trials 1 and 2, calves were fed DRC-based diets with U, SBM/U, or FTH/U. Calves fed SBM/U or FTH/U were more efficient (P $<$.05) and gained faster (P $<$.10) than calves fed U. In receiving Trial 3, calves were fed alfalfa hay and DRC or WCGF, without or with EP. Calves fed WCGF gained slower (P $<$.05) than calves fed DRC. Efficiency was improved (P $<$.10) with EP. In finishing Trial 3, calves were fed DRC or DRC/WCGF, without or with EP. Calves fed DRC/WCGF were more efficient (P $<$.15) than calves fed DRC. In receiving Trial 4, calves were fed diets similar to those in receiving Trial 3. Calves fed WCGF gained similarly (P $>$.15) and were more efficient (P $<$.10) than calves fed DRC. In finishing Trial 4, calves were fed DRC, DRC/WCGF, high-moisture corn (HMC), HMC/WCGF, and DRC/HMC, without or with EP. An energy source $\times$ protein supplement interaction was detected for gain (P $<$.05) and efficiency (P $<$.01). In the metabolism trial, calves were fed alfalfa hay and DRC or WCGF. Ruminal digestibility of DM, CP, and starch was higher (P $< $.10) for WCGF compared with DRC. Results suggest: (1) supplemental EP improves performance of calves fed DRC-based finishing diets, (2) WCGF has an NE$\rm\sb{g}$ greater than DRC in receiving diets, but slightly less than DRC in finishing diets, and (3) WCGF is digested in the rumen to a greater extent than is DRC.
