An examination of the outcome of a brief psychiatric hospitalization with particular reference to the therapeutic alliance and select patient characteristics

Richard Thomas Sonnenberg, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Seventy-one in-patients on a short-stay, psychiatric ward were administered the SCL-90-R, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the State Hope Scale, the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, and the Therapeutic Alliance Questionnaire upon admission. Subjects were hospitalized between four days and four weeks. The demographic characteristics of age, sex, marital status, admission primary diagnosis, service-connected status, and service-connected percentage amount were noted. The associations between the demographic characteristics and the therapeutic alliance engendered between staff and patients, as well as the predictive power of these associations, were examined. Gender, primary admission diagnosis, and service-connected percentage amount accounted for over 25% of the variance in the alliance engendered. The associations between the patient variables of interest (e.g., anger), as well as the predictive power of these associations, were examined. The variables of interest did not predict the alliance. Finally, the associations between the patient variables of interest, the alliance and several measures of the hospitalization outcome, as well as the predictive power of these associations, was examined. The independent variables of interest were able to discriminate among the discharge medication groupings of patients. A preliminary reliability examination of the Therapeutic Alliance Questionnaire was undertaken.
