As we are: A study of contemporary Irish women's poetry

Stacia Lenai Bensyl, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Irish women have been making significant contributions to contemporary poetry, but their diversity has not been fully appreciated. Too often they have been described as "the women poets" without acknowledging diverse issues such as inspiration, sexuality, motherhood, or nationalism. Ireland's status as a post-colonial country figures significantly in the poetry of many contemporary Irish poets, but its exclusion by many post-colonial scholars parallels the exclusion or segregation many contemporary Irish women poets have experienced. This study examines the poetry of the most widely published contemporary Irish women poets, focusing on the multi-facetedness of who they are, what their life experience is, and what inspires them to write. As the work of larger numbers of Irish women poets is published, critics, scholars and publishers will be compelled to take them as they are, in all their diversity.
