Abstract

Andreas Werckmeister (1645-1706), one of Germany's leading music theorists at the turn of the eighteenth century, wrote both treatises on music theory and works concerning organ building. Of the latter, his Orgel-Probe (1698) is the best known, and a central source of information on German Baroque organ building. While the Orgel-Probe is a method for testing organs, the Organum Gruningense redivivum is Werckmeister's application of his own principles and methods for organ examination in a report about the organ at the castle at Groningen, near Halberstadt, Germany. Werckmeister was summoned by Friedrich I, King of Prussia, to advise and inspect the renovation work that Christoph Contius did at the organ at Groningen. Werckmeister's report, the Organum Gruningense redivivum, was printed in 1705. The organ at Groningen, finished in 1596, was built by David Beck under the patronage of Duke Heinrich Julius, bishop of Halberstadt. With fifty-nine stops, this organ was the largest of its day. In 1769, when the castle was dismantled, the organ came to the Martinikirche in Halberstadt. Later, the organ was dismantled and today all that remains is the facade. Therefore, the most detailed information about the characteristics of that instrument is the examination report left by Werckmeister. Besides all the information about organ building practices of the time, Werckmeister inserted in this document names of important German musicians of the day. Hence, from the eighteenth century on, this report became a source document for music encyclopedias and dictionaries.
