Computer -assisted instruction as a part of the elementary social studies program of the Lincoln Public Schools

Abstract

The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the attitudes of selected teachers toward the use of computers in teaching social studies at the elementary school level in the same school system and to assess the degree to which computer technology was being utilized in teaching social studies at the elementary school level in the Lincoln Public Schools in Lincoln, Nebraska. ^ A researcher designed survey was utilized to obtain data that enabled the researcher to assess the use of computer by the elementary social studies teachers employed by Lincoln Public Schools, Lincoln, Nebraska. Each volunteer teacher was asked to respond to a survey which contained 28 items on a 5-point Likert scale, and 14 open-ended questions. A descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed to determine whether there were significant differences between teachers from schools identified as high computer use schools and teachers from schools identified as low computer use schools and to determine teachers' attitude toward computer-assisted instruction in the social studies program. ^ The researcher was able to make recommendations based on findings, and provided an understanding for the instructional applications of the use of computers in the social studies program. ^
