Males' experiences in a predominately female elementary teacher education program: A multiple case study

Elvira Sanatullova-Allison, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

While the percentage of men and women is becoming more balanced in most professions, there is one occupation where men are noticeably absent and greatly needed. Only 15% of the nation's public school elementary teachers are men. Moreover, among the country's pre-service teachers majoring in elementary education, only 11% are males. Therefore, the overall purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of male pre-service teachers enrolled in an elementary teacher education program that is predominantly female. A preliminary review of literature represents a brief summary of some of the existent research regarding the origins of the continuing shortage of male elementary school teachers and its impact on the state of education in this country. A qualitative multiple case design was used in the study. Nine men enrolled in three different levels of an elementary teacher education program were purposefully selected as participants. The data was collected using two methods: (1) interviews, which were face-to-face, semi-structured, with open-ended questions, and (2) documents, which included participants' autobiographies, reflective journals, self-evaluations from practica and student teaching, papers, and other relevant materials. Data analysis occurred simultaneously with data collection. Within-case analyses were conducted first, followed by a cross-case analysis. The following themes emerged from the collected and analyzed data: (a) influences, (b) support and encouragement, (c) lack of positive male role models, and (d) experiences unique to men. The findings were presented through a thematic Venn diagram. The results of the study produced a number of recommendations for further research as well as implications for recruitment, training, and retention of male elementary school teachers.
