Abstract

The paper discusses the role of libraries in bridging gender inequality in Nigeria. Gender inequality is discrimination on the basis of sex or gender where one sex or gender is placed in a more advantageous position than the other. Gender inequality is one issue that has been on the front burner but efforts to tackle it are not yielding the desired results. In the light of this, the idea of libraries wading into the matter seems a better option. The paper discusses the factors responsible for gender inequality in Nigeria as follows: socio-cultural factors, socio-economic factors, socio-religious factors, socio-political factors, educational factors and legal factors. Furthermore, it examines the digital gender gap and proffers appropriate strategies to tackle it. In view of the factors encouraging gender inequality in Nigeria, it is recommended that libraries can leverage the digital age to curb the trend. Other recommendations include libraries engaging in strong partnership with NGOs, organizing intensive campaigns, awareness and sensitization or outreach programmes meant to address gender inequality, among others.
