Abstract

This thesis is a critical comment centered on John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. This particular work by Steinbeck has been thoroughly neglected, and therefore must be discussed. It is also of his earlier works, one which shows the new and positive direction of his writing. The aim is to analyze the book closely in an attempt to ascertain the intention of the author and to judge the success of failure of the novel in the terms under which it was written.

By extension, recurrent themes and techniques in previous novels are need to be included in this analysis. Only after such a consideration can a judgment be formed as to the relative merits of the writing as a work of art and the relative merits of the writer as an artist.
