Abstract

Abstract in English:

María Luisa Bombal, with a pair of short novels, marks a moment of real change. She is the first to write on topics that, up until this moment, have been little considered: the intimate reality of the feminine mind; the dream-reality duality; the surreality of death… She also contributes another novelty: she does not relegate only the minimum expression to the first person omniscient narrator of the 19th century novel, instead she establishes distinct planes of narration with which she streamlines the triangle of communication: narrator-world-reader. She narrates in a lyrical tone, which gives her prose a high poetic quality. This same condition permits her to venture into all sorts of topics without provoking rejection.

The present study will, first, give a sufficiently general description of the panorama of the Chilean novel from Blest Gana up until the moment in which Bombal appeared. It is interesting to see the author within her historical context in order to appreciate her contribution and evaluate her influence.

After this, the study will discuss the narrative of Bombal in her two novels, La última niebla [The House of Mist] (1935) and La amortajada [The Shrouded Woman] (1938). In La última niebla, the leitmotiv, the fog, will be considered from three perspectives. In La amortajada the characters and the levels of narration will be studied.

Finally, the mood will be analyzed, that is to say, the writer’s attitude to the world, an attitude that is made concrete in intonation or style.

With this study, it is hoped to arrive at some valid conclusions. Or at least, to know better an author who, on her own, established a new plane of literature and gave foundations to a generation that is making history: the Generation of ‘50.
