The Effect of High Amylose Corn on the Development of Five Species of Stored-Grain Insects

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if high amylose corn affected larval nutrition and survival of five stored-grain insect species. If it were found that high amylose corn affected the growth of one or more of these species, such insects possibly might then be used for high amylose corn seed selection. Thus, tests were conducted to determine if high amylose corn affected larval nutrition, as reflected by average adult weight, and larval survival, as reflected by the total number of adults. The experiments were conducted using the following five species of stored-grain insects: the granary weevil, the rice weevil, the angoumois grain moth, the lesser grain borer, and the red flour beetle.
