Abstract

The primary objective of this study was to determine possible differences between chemicals, formulations, rates of application, and tolerance of different crops. These were measured in moisture loss of seeds, percentages of seed shatter and pod dehiscence, seed yield, seed germination and seed quality as reflected by kernel weight. Based on the data presented in this study it appears that the application of some chemical desiccants as preharvest sprays may reduce the ripening period of switchgrass as much as 4 to 6 days. The stage of plant maturity at which the desiccants should be applied is a factor which warrants further study.
