Abstract

In this paper, Willa Cather’s characters as well as her method of characterization are studied. There has been no attempt to make a definitive study of characterization but rather an effort to discuss this element, in some detail, from three points of view: (1) her characterization as it related to her own theories of writing and of art which are stated or implied in her critical essays, interviews, and other sources; (2) her characterization through description of physical and material attributes of a person, and (3) her characterization through description of mental attitudes and attributes of a person.
