Their permission to use this information is greatly appreciated. There are four species of prairie dogs in the United States. These are the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus), white-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys leucurus), Utah prairie dog (Cynomys parvidens) and Gunnison's prairie dog (Cynomys gunnisoni) (Jones et al, 1975).
