Abstract

ABSTRACT

The study evaluates the application of information resource development strategies for acquisition in special libraries: A case study of Benue State University College of Health Science Library, Makurdi. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire. The population for the study comprised of 19 medical librarians at Benue State University College of Health Science Library, Makurdi. The entire population of 19 staff was used as sample because it is small and can easily be managed by the researchers. The data collected were presented in tables and analysed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and mean scores. Findings of the study revealed that, books, journals/serials, multimedia resources, databases, internet resources, gazetteers, encyclopedias, archival materials and periodicals are available in the college of health science library, Makurdi. Findings also indicated that, strategies in use for acquisition of information resources at Benue State University College of Health Sciences Library Makurdi includes: direct purchase, gifts and exchange, donations, cooperative arrangement, endowments, provision of a written development policy, and strict adherence to the resources development policy. The study further revealed lack of clearly state annual budget allocation, lack of priorities for information resource development, the collection development librarians were not computer literate and hence lack knowledge to work in a network environment to meet the objectives of resource sharing among other as the challenges encountered in the application of information resource development strategies for acquisition at Benue state University College of health sciences, Makurdi. Findings of the study also indicated the strategies adopted to provide lasting solutions to the challenges of the application of resource development strategies at the college of health science library, Makurdi.
