Indian Preference. Is It Fair? (11/28/00)

Date of this Version

November 2000

Abstract

The Indian Preference Act is under attack! This federal hiring policy was originally adopted to combat discrimination against Native people and encourage the hiring of tribal members. Now, lawmakers in Washington are saying that The Indian Preference Act is race-based and unconstitutional. Should it be repealed? Or is it a Native affirmative action plan that needs to be strengthened?
