Anna Von Mertens pays tribute to a pioneer quilter, Anna Zerissa Morse Thurston, who traveled from Maine to California in the 1880s, almost certainly going through Nebraska on the Oregon Trail. Using computer technology to chart the star pattern at dawn on the day the woman was born in Maine and at dusk the day she died in California.
Von Mertens created a diptych of two 100-inch long pieces. Three pieces form the Aura series.
