Abstract

Part One of this thesis is an examination of the nature of Chinese music—the evolution of its musical scales and its notation systems—with supporting examples of Chinese music as evidence. This examination leads to an explanation of the distinctive characteristics of Chinese music.

Part Two of the research focuses the harmonic basis of Chinese music, again, drawing upon pieces of Chinese music as support.

Part Three includes musical examples of cadences, modulations, shifting on tonality, and harmonization built by the interval of the perfect fourth. Compositions include Little Piece, Round, Little White Cabbage, and Sonata-Allegro.
